In order to provide greater clarity on how assertive discipline can be applied, below we break down six basic points that are important to keep in mind in order to make efficient use of this approach.
1.- Always consider that there is no better teaching than the one taught by example, so it is the responsibility of the teachers and adults around the students to behave respectfully toward people and toward the boundaries that have been established within the very institution where the school context takes place.
2.- Establish clear, consistent rules that are applicable in practice and easy to understand.
3.- Determine logical consequences related to the behavior, reinforcing desirable behaviors with positive consequences, and changing undesirable behaviors with negative consequences.
4.- Boundaries related to the safety, health and respect of students are not negotiable under any circumstances.
5.- Rules and consequences must be expressed directly and respectfully. Respect must come first from the adult who is guiding the student.
6. Keep a broad view of boundaries, without seeing them simply as a way to control behavior, but also considering them as a way to guide students to act responsibly and make good decisions.
